COMMUNITY OF TEACHERS
A Community of Teachers is an alternative program to IU's Teacher Education program. It is a highly individualized and self-motivated approach to teacher education that allows students to develop a portfolio of teaching competencies from experience in the field rather than completing required coursework. The teaching competencies are based on national standards set forth in the Interstate New Teacher Assessment Standards Consortium (INTASC).
I was part of a cohort of about 15 students from a variety of content areas and at different stages in their education that met once a week to explore issues in secondary education. We were expected to seek and establish an apprenticeship with a teacher in the field that we would visit once a week throughout our undergraduate studies and culminate in student teaching for.
I observed over 20 teachers in 6 different schools before selecting my mentor, Danielle Ontiveros, at Fishers High School. I spent a total of 300+ hours in the field under her guidance before student teaching for her.
